General information, not medical advice or an insurance coverage decision. MedraxDME operates as an out of network supplier. Coverage, supplier enrollment requirements and patient responsibility depend on the plan and an individual review.
A jointed knee orthosis
The CMS: October 2026 HCPCS release and quarterly updates distinguishes L1833 from simple sleeves and braces without joints. Its joints may use one or multiple centers of rotation. The category includes rigid support and an adjustable joint configuration; it does not identify one brand, size or side.
A knee brace that looks similar online may have a different purpose or classification. Confirm the actual model, left or right version when relevant, size and prescribed support. Your clinician should determine what is appropriate for the condition being treated. Do not change joint stops or movement settings using a code description.
Coverage depends on the clinical record
The CMS: Knee Orthoses coverage policy L33318 sets out criteria for adjustable knee orthoses, including specified injury, surgery or instability circumstances. It also explains the examination documentation relevant to instability. A report of knee discomfort alone should not be treated as proof that all requirements have been met.
CMS separately describes the distinction between off the shelf and custom fitted products. CMS: Knee Orthoses policy article A52465. Ask whether the prescribed brace, fitting and documentation match the request being reviewed. Keep the clinical decision with the treating team rather than asking an office to change a diagnosis merely to obtain approval.
A dated authorization change in 2026
As reviewed on October 27, 2026, CMS has announced nationwide required prior authorization for L1833 beginning October 28, 2026. An older statement that this code was removed from the authorization list in 2024 is not sufficient for a later service date. Check the current CMS: Current DMEPOS prior authorization requirements.
Before supply, ask the dispensing team which rules apply to the planned date and whether the necessary review is complete. Do not interpret this upcoming requirement as a denial of all requests or a promise of approval. Browse braces and supports and use the written order guide to understand how the order and clinical record support the process.
Questions and answers
Does L1833 identify a left knee brace?
No. The code describes the equipment category. Product side, size and model still need to be identified separately.
