DME AND INSURANCE INFORMATION

Pressure mattresses, alternating pressure systems and bed wedges

A foam mattress, powered air mattress and positioning wedge are different products. Identify the support your care team ordered before comparing models or asking about insurance.

General information, not medical advice or an insurance coverage decision. MedraxDME operates as an out of network supplier. Coverage, supplier enrollment requirements and patient responsibility depend on the plan and an individual review.

Identify the support surface your clinician means

A search for a pressure mattress can return several types of equipment. The important starting point is the prescribed support surface and how it fits the existing bed. A positioning wedge does not replace a mattress, and a foam mattress does not have the controls of a powered air system. These distinctions should stay clear when discussing a request.

The MedraxDME bed support catalog contains a DMI Ortho foam wedge, a Geo Mattress Pro RP foam mattress and a Drive Med Aire alternating pressure mattress system. The listings describe individual products, rather than a complete bed package.

Compare the exact models and dimensions

The listed DMI wedge measures 6 by 20 by 24 inches. The Geo Mattress Pro RP configuration measures 80 by 35 by 6 inches and has a raised perimeter. The Drive Med Aire system is a mattress replacement with an included control pump; the listed model combines alternating pressure and low air loss. A shared word such as “support” does not make these products interchangeable.

Keep the existing bed manufacturer, model and usable mattress dimensions available for the equipment team. Ask which bed configurations the proposed surface supports, whether installation is required and what components are included. Match the exact model before relying on a photograph.

Review insurance separately from product features

Medicare has separate policies for different groups of pressure reducing support surfaces. The applicable policy and medical record determine whether its criteria are met. A product name, an air pump or a foam construction does not by itself establish a coverage group or approval. See CMS: Pressure Reducing Support Surfaces, Group 1 (L33830) and CMS: Pressure Reducing Support Surfaces, Group 2 (L33642).

Ask your insurer which benefit applies, whether authorization is required, and whether the intended supplier is eligible under your plan. An order and a benefits conversation are different from a final coverage decision. MedraxDME’s insurance review does not establish Medicare enrollment or an agreement with a particular plan.

Questions to settle before delivery

  • Which exact support surface and configuration did the clinician order?
  • Has compatibility with the existing bed been confirmed?
  • Does the request include a pump, cover and any required installation?
  • Who provides setup instructions and handles a product fault?
  • Will the arrangement be rental or ownership under the applicable benefit?
  • What authorization, documentation and patient responsibility remain to be reviewed?

Keep any clinical care instructions separate from the equipment checklist. This guide does not select a mattress for a wound or replace advice from the clinician managing skin care and positioning.

Start an insurance callback

MedraxDME accepts equipment inquiries across the USA. Use the insurance review form to share contact details, then discuss the exact product with the team. Keep medical records and insurance member numbers out of the public form. Availability, suitability, coverage and delivery arrangements must be confirmed for the individual request.

Questions and answers

Is a bed wedge the same as a pressure mattress?

No. The wedge is a separate positioning cushion. A mattress support surface has a different size, construction and role in the equipment setup.

Does an alternating pressure mattress listing guarantee insurance coverage?

No. The prescription, clinical documentation, applicable benefit and supplier requirements need individual review.
