DME AND INSURANCE INFORMATION

Catheters and urinary drainage supplies

A clear urology supply request identifies the device type, size and collection setup. Similar names do not make catheters or drainage accessories interchangeable.

General information, not medical advice or an insurance coverage decision. MedraxDME operates as an out of network supplier. Coverage, supplier enrollment requirements and patient responsibility depend on the plan and an individual review.

Separate the catheter types

An intermittent catheter, an external catheter and a urine collection bag are different items. Intermittent catheter listings can vary by straight or coudé tip, French size, length, coating and handling design. Some combine the catheter with an attached collection bag. An external catheter fits a different collection arrangement and uses its own sizing information.

Use the terminology from the clinician’s order and the existing product label. A number without its unit is incomplete: French size, millimeters and length describe different specifications. Do not change a tip, size or length solely because another item appears more convenient.

Match bags and attachment accessories

Urinary leg bags and larger drainage bags differ in capacity, materials, tubing and intended attachment. Reusable and disposable products also have different care requirements. A replacement strap is not a complete bag, and a bedside hanger serves a different purpose from a wearable strap.

Before requesting an accessory, identify the bag and its connection or attachment points. Record whether the item needed is the complete collection component, tubing supplied with it or a separate attachment. Ask the team to confirm compatibility against the exact product rather than its photograph.

Prepare a precise insurance discussion

The CMS urological supplies policy separates product types, medical necessity and documentation requirements. A supply allowance is not an instruction to change a prescribed routine. Your plan and supplier arrangement must be reviewed individually. CMS: Urological Supplies (L33803).

  • Which catheter type, tip, diameter and length were ordered?
  • Does the request require an integrated bag or separate collection equipment?
  • Which components are already included?
  • What order or authorization is still needed?

Request help with the next step

Browse the urology catalog to identify the relevant item, then request a private insurance callback. Keep member numbers and clinical records out of the public form. The team can explain the documentation route and confirm the product requested. Product availability, insurance approval and delivery arrangements are separate confirmations; none follows automatically from an inquiry.

Questions and answers

Are catheter diameter and length the same specification?

No. Both must match the prescribed product. A matching French size does not establish the correct length, tip or collection setup.

Can a bag strap replace any other strap?

Not automatically. Confirm the attachment points and fit range for the exact bag.
